The Plant Scene for 2020 – our top picks for the year ahead

The question was raised “what plants will we see going into landscapes in 2020?”. Who better to answer this than our very own Joanne. She shares her thoughts on the plants that we will likely be seeing more of this year…

“Considering the fires across the country; the drought; and increased water restrictions in NSW, we need to be mindful of what we are planting moving forward. I find that you can really get a lot of pleasure from the following:

Any of the Mediterranean plants, they will be right at home in our new drier climate. Plants such as Juniperus ‘Spartan’, Rosemary and Chinese Star Jasmine are a great combination for a hot garden location, giving some screening as well as interest.

A mix of succulents with a Frangipani can be a beautiful combination, to provide a lusher, sub-tropical feel”.

Frangipani (Plumeria)

Frangipani provide a lush sub-tropical feel. Deciduous in Sydney’s winter months, with leaves and flowers blossoming from November through to April.

They make a wonderful statement tree, providing shade in summer and a structural feature in winter.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis “Prostratus”)

Native to the Mediterranean, there are a number of varieties of this edible shrub, with our most used being Prostrate Rosemary. The trailing and fragrant herb is pretty planted along walling where it can drape and flow.

Succulents

Chinese Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)

An evergreen climber with glossy green leaves and beautifully perfumed flowers during Sydney’s summer months.

Relatively fast growing, Chinese Star Jasmine can be pruned to suit a formal garden setting, left to grow as a crawling ground cover or trained to work its way along lattice or wires.
