A Dated Bathroom Undergoes Elegant Transformation

The tired main bathroom in a beautiful and much-loved family federation home in Mosman needed an upgrade. The client came to us from our great partner Dave from Peninsula Contemporary Bathrooms and desired a bathroom with added storage, an open shower and a design that felt contemporary yet reflected the style of the home.

The existing bathroom had a common 1980’s layout that unfortunately led you straight into the shower and made the toilet the centre of attention. In this long, narrow space, it was certainly a challenge to fit everything in, without feeling like you’re zig-zagging through it.

Interior Designer Angela worked closely with the client to define the design and style that would best suit this space. Multiple concepts were worked through, from contemporary designs to classic styles with the final design to deliver a clean and classic result that created a sense of space.

With marble to be a major design element of the bathroom, both Angela and the client enjoyed a trip out to the marble wholesaler to select the slab of Carrara marble, which adds a luxurious, spa-like feel to the bathroom.

Throughout the construction process, Angela was in constant contact with Dave and all trades, and often on-site to lead the design process through to the conclusion. As with any construction process, there were some challenges that were overcome. Originally the design had included a gooseneck mixer tap at the head of the bath, however if there was ever a problem with the mixer, it wouldn’t be accessible, so the design was changed to allow for the tap to be separate from the mixer, which was mounted to the wall for ease of access.

A testament to the team’s attention to detail was the challenge of seamlessly lining up the 20mm marble to meet the 12mm tiles, without an overhang.

To simplify the layout in the narrow room, Angela designed a swing door on the shower screen, however for it to work, it needed to be as long as possible while still being able to close on itself without hitting the shower head (margin of error <5mm!). The screen was measured before the shower head was installed, and unfortunately it didn’t close! The poor contractors had to re-make the screen to fit.

The result is an elegant bathroom that is functional for family life, yet complements the federation style of the home. The client was thrilled with the result and enjoyed the process from design through to construction and completion.
