Woollahra

Some gardens are created to be masterpieces, while others are meant as frames for something else. This intimate courtyard garden was commissioned by the proud owners of a sculpture by Christopher Hodges, who wanted a modern outdoor space to complement their new acquisition.

Because the garden was to be enjoyed from both inside the house looking out, and outside on the patio, a number of plants were chosen for their distinctive aesthetic qualities and then artfully lit from below to create a striking impression at night. A special lighting scheme was also devised for the sculpture, which sits beside an ultra-modern chair and table set for entertaining guests.

Their existing Cupressus hedge was retained along with sandstone paving, while beautiful Chinese Elms (Ulmus parvifolia) were chosen to create an overhanging canopy as well as provide privacy. The verdant greenery forms a backdrop for the artwork that changes with the wind, imbuing it with an animated quality. As the seasons change around it, the sculpture’s steadfast appearance speaks of its timeless appeal.

Although, as a rule, a frame cannot compete with the masterpiece it showcases, in almost every regard this garden in Woollahra, NSW can be appreciated along with its inspiration in equal measure; the presence of one greatly affecting the other.
