Newport
This apartment block on the edge of Newport Beach, NSW came with a long list of unique requirements which the team readily met with enthusiasm. Even as challenges mounted and uncontrollable setbacks occurred – including one of the worst droughts in recent memory – every problem was quickly adapted to without compromise.
The new gardens would beautify the space, while aiming to discourage members of the public from wandering through the property or using its parking facilities on their way to the beach. The seaside location also provided obstacles to the establishment of plants: strong onshore salt-laden winds and sandy soil. Fortunately, Joanne Green Landscape Design’s experience with a wide range of scenarios made it easy to select hardy plants that could withstand the elements while providing the property with a pleasing aspect from all directions.
In the finished garden, White Correas (Correa alba), Blue Tussock Grass (Poa poliformis ‘Courtney’), Pohutukawas (Metrosideros spp.), Mat Rushes (Lomandra hystrix), and Grass Trees (Xanthorrhoea spp.) are assembled in a series of mounded gardens, designed to emulate a natural landscape with the occasional sandstone boulder to break up the thriving greenery. Further adding to the seaside look are decomposed granite paths, timber bollards, and stone-clad entry pillars.
An ongoing maintenance service ensures that this 2007 project continues to thrive and provide the residents of Newport Beach with a view to match the splendour of the Pacific Ocean beyond.
