Manly
While expansive estates certainly lend themselves to more fanciful designs, it is our belief that the quality of a garden is not proportionate to its size. Often, it is the projects where we are forced to devise clever, good-looking solutions to problems of space that we are most proud of.
This property in Manly, NSW, was being renovated for a large young family when Joanne Green Landscape Design was invited to offer ideas. Maximizing the use of available space was high on the list of priorities, as was ensuring child safety throughout the garden area. Moreover, it had to be a place where the family could play and spend time together.
In the finished garden, french doors from the house open out to a casual dining area, which leads to a raised lawn designed for the children’s use. The lawn serves the added purpose of accommodating a change in ground level. Child-proof security gates were fitted on both sides, and space was even found for an outdoor clothes-drying area.
To complement the house and local conditions, a few elegant subtropical plants such as Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatis), Sweet Virburnum (Viburnum odoratissimum), and Murraya (Murraya paniculata) were selected by the team, working closely with the owners. Careful arrangement allows the garden to seem more spacious, while small details like fence creepers give the new home an immediate lived-in look. Although designed to require little maintenance, the team from Joanne Green provides regular visits to ensure this little garden looks perfect in all seasons.
