Duffy's Forest
The site of this beautiful family home in the vicinity of Duffy’s Forest called for the development of a multi-faceted garden to complement such facilities as a swimming pool, horse stables, riding arena, chicken coup, and an aviary. The owners wished to preserve the property’s existing native plants at the perimeter, while adding contemporary gardens around the house.
As with all Joanne Green Landscape Design projects, work began with a carefully considered planning process, and in this case, countless visits were made to the site in order to study its unique qualities. The indigenous “nature strip” near the road was thickened with new plantings to increase privacy and encourage a natural habitat for birds and wildlife. In another eco-friendly move, an on-site dam collects all excess drainage which can then be reused for irrigation.
For the house gardens, hardy subtropical plants like Magnolia, Murraya (Murraya paniculata), Yucca, and Lily Turf (Liriope) were chosen for their ability to withstand harsh seasonal conditions and play well with the owners’ horses and dogs. Through careful blending and design, the native and exotic plantings retain their original purposes and flavour while appearing as one seamless whole in practice.
A charmingly weathered driveway leading to the stables and parking area was constructed from old brick, adding to the unique identity of the property. Dianella, Mat Rushes (Lomandra ‘tanika’), and Cardboard Palms were used to frame the path with colour and variety, while Agave (Agave attenuate) and other succulent plants around the swimming pool heighten the feeling of a private oasis. The result is a garden of character that supports the lifestyle and values of its owner’s family.
