Bayview
The challenge in designing a garden for a brand-new property such as this house in Bayview, NSW, is understanding the area’s unique qualities and constraints. At the same time, this project presented an excellent opportunity to have home and garden arise together in harmony from blueprint to reality.
Pairing the colour of foliage plants with the proposed paints for the house was an important step in the design process. During a survey, the team quickly realized that any garden should strive to frame the stunning natural landscape visible from the top of the premises, not compete with it. Very much on the same page, the owners requested an informal direction that would preserve the location’s native charm.
As a result, the final landscape design draws visitors up an understated, tree-shrouded driveway towards the main building, before dramatically giving way to views of the water below.
A garden like this is built to last for years, and paying attention to the right details can make all the difference. Noting the presence of Eucalyptus and Angophora (Angophora costata) trees overhead, the driveway’s paving material was carefully chosen to perform in spite of the inevitable leaf drop, while balancing the need to support the weight of multiple vehicles in the garage.
Joanne Green Landscape Design’s experience in every aspect of construction and maintenance also ensured that lighting and irrigation systems were placed out of sight, without affecting their aesthetic and functional potential.
