Balgowlah Heights
The family at this Balgowlah Heights home wanted to bring colour and life to their three gardens at the front, back and pool areas. Existing plantings, surfaces and walls were tired and discoloured, and they needed a new entertaining space to suit gatherings of friends and family, teens and adults.
Their brief included a need to create a bolder presence in the front garden, add sculptural elements, and highlight the bald exposed rock in the back garden as a unique feature.
A rustic yet minimalist design now brings the spaces together, with natural sandstone cladding used on all the masonry walling with recycled wood highlights. Plantings of coastal natives, such as Coastal Rosemary, Cushion Bush, White Correa and Rosemary Grevillea, were used throughout.
Metal sculptures sourced from a local Sydney artist add visual interest and continue the rustic colour theme. The bold contrast between the green visual feast of specimen plantings and sandstone extends the sculptural flow and is highlighted with dramatic lighting in the evening. The new tree plantings of Melaleuca armillaris in the front garden were chosen for their shape, as they will become gnarled with age.
A new fire pit with circular seating creates a unique gathering place for family and friends all year round, and a new BBQ shelter was constructed, including services and new stainless steel BBQ, to make the most of the stunning outdoor entertaining areas.
